You will need:-

Stylecraft Special Chunky in Cream (60 grams)

Stylecraft Special DK in Graphite (20 grams)

Stylecraft Special Dk in Sliver (20 grams)

Stylecraft Special DK in Aster (10 grams)

Small amount of Black Yarn for nose & small amount of Red Yarn for scroll

5.00 mm & 3.5 mm hooks

Needle to weave in ends and to make nose

Stuffing

Orange & Black 10mm eyes

White thick paper/thin card approx. size 7 cms x 5 cms.

Ch – Chain

Dc – Double crochet

HTre – Half Treble

Tre – Treble

DTre – Double Treble

Dec – decrease (Before completing stitch put the hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull through, yarn over and take off all loops on hook as normal). Dec for special stitch is explained in pattern.

Special stitch – Yarn over, insert hook in same stitch as last stitch, yarn over, make loop same size as rest of stitches, yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and make loop the same size as rest of stitches, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on hook, chain 1

TENSION

5.00 mm hook and Stylecraft Chunky done in dc 4cm x 4cm = 6 stitches x 6 rows.

OWL BODY

With cream chunky yarn and 5.00 mm hook chain 4, slip stitch in 1st stitch.

Round 1:- 1 chain, 11 dc, slip stitch into 1st chain (total 11 dc & 1 ch = 12 stitches).

Round 2:- 1 chain, 1 dc in first stitch, * 1 dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch,* repeat from *-* 5 times, 1 dc in next stitch, slip stitch into 1st chain (total 17 dc’s & 1 chain = 18 stitches).

Round 3:- 1 chain, 1 dc in first stitch, * 1 dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch,* repeat from *-* 5 times, 1 dc in next 2 stitches,slip stitch into 1st chain  (total 23 dc’s & 1 chain = 24 stitches).

Round 4:- 1 chain, 1 dc in first stitch, * 1 dc in next 3 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch,* repeat from *-* 5 times, 1 dc in next 3 stitches, slip stitch into 1st chain (total 29 dc’s & 1 chain = 30 stitches).

Round 5:- 1 chain, 1 dc in first stitch, * 1 dc in next 4 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch,* repeat from *-* 5 times, 1 dc in next 4 stitches, slip stitch into 1st chain (total 35 dc’s & 1 chain = 36 stitches).

Round 6:- 1 chain, 1 dc in first stitch, * 1 dc in next 5 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch,* repeat from *-* 5 times, 1 dc in next 5 stitches, slip stitch into 1st chain (total 41 dc’s & 1 chain = 42 stitches).

Round 7:- 1 chain, special stitch to end (see terminology at beginning of pattern), slip stitch in 1st chain, (total 1 chain at beginning & 40 stitches).

Round 8:- 1 chain, *special stitch 5 times, (Dec. in special stitch -yarn over, insert hook in same stitch as last stitch, yarn over, make loop same size as rest of stitches, yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and make loop the same size as rest of stitches, yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and make loop the same size as rest of stitches, yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on hook, chain 1)* repeat from * – *  6 times omitting the dec stitch on the last repeat, slip stitch in 1st chain, (total 1 chain at beginning & 35 stitches).

Round 9:- 1 chain, *special stitch 4 times, dec in special stitch (see instructions in round 8)* repeat from * – *  6 times omitting the dec stitch on the last repeat replacing with a special stitch, slip stitch in 1st chain, (total 1 chain at beginning & 30 stitches).

Round 10 :- 1 chain, *special stitch 3 times, , dec in special stitch (see instructions in round 8)* repeat from * – *  6 times,  slip stitch in 1st chain, (total 1 chain at beginning & 24 stitches).

Round 11:- 1 chain, *special stitch 2 times, dec in special stitch (see instructions in round 8)* repeat from * – *  6 times, slip stitch in 1st chain, (total 1 chain at beginning & 18 stitches).

Round 12:- 1 chain, *special stitch 1, , dec in special stitch (see instructions in round 8)* repeat from * – *  6 times, slip stitch in 1st chain, (total 1 chain at beginning & 12 stitches).

Turn your work inside out and weave in the end from the starting chain, then turn your work right side out.

OWL NECK & HEAD

Round 13:- 1 chain, 1 dc in 1st stitch, 1 dc in each stitch to end, slip stitch into 1st chain (total 13 dc’s & 1 chain = 14 stitches)

Round 14 & 15 :- repeat round 13.

Round 16:- 1 chain, 1 dc in first stitch, * 2 dc’s in next stitch, 1 dc in next stitch*, repeat from *-* 6 times, 2 dc’s in last stitch, slip stitch into 1st chain, (totals 21 dc’s & 1 chain = 22 stitches).

Round 17:-  1 chain, 1 dc in first stitch, * 2 dc’s in next stitch, 1 dc in next 2 stitches*, repeat from *-* 7 times, slip stitch into 1st chain , (totals 29 dc’s & 1 chain = 30 stitches).

Round 18:- 1 chain, 1 dc in first stitch, * 2 dc’s in next stitch, 1 dc in next 3 stitches*, repeat from *-* 7 times, 1 dc in last stitch, slip stitch into 1st chain, (totals 37 dc’s & 1 chain = 38 stitches).

Round 19:- 1 chain, 1 dc in first stitch, * 2 dc’s in next stitch, 1 dc in next 4 stitches*, repeat from *-* 7 times, 1 dc in the next 2 stitches, slip stitch into 1st chain, (totals 45 dc’s & 1 chain = 46 stitches).

Round 20:- 1chain, 1 dc in first stitch * dec 1, 1 dc in next 3 stitches*, repeat from *-* 9 times slip stitch into 1st chain, (total 37 dc’s & 1 chain = 38 stitches).

Round 21:- 1chain, 1 dc in first stitch * dec 1, 1 dc in next 2 stitches*, repeat from *-* 9 times, 1 dc in last stitch, slip stitch into 1st chain, (total 29 dc’s & 1 chain = 30 stitches).

Round 22:- 1chain, 1 dc in first stitch * dec 1, 1 dc in next stitch*, repeat from *-* 9 times, 1 dc in next 2 stitches, slip stitch into 1st chain, (total 21 dc’s & 1 chain = 22 stitches).

Round 23:- 1chain, 1 dc in first stitch * dec 1, 1 dc in next stitch*, repeat from *-* 7 times, slip stitch into 1st chain, (total 15 dc’s & 1 chain = 16 stitches).

At this point add the eyes, sew on a nose with the black yarn and stuff. (You may prefer to stuff a cream sock and make this the shape of the owl, then push this into the body of the owl).

Round 24:- 1chain, 1 dc in first stitch * dec 1, 1 dc in next stitch*, repeat from *-* 5 times, slip stitch into 1st chain, (total 11 dc’s & 1 chain = 12 stitches).

Round 25:- 1chain, 1 dc in first stitch * dec 1, 1 dc in next stitch*, repeat from *-* 3 times, 1 dc in last stitch, slip stitch into 1st chain, (total 8 dc’s & 1 chain = 9 stitches).

Finish of, add more stuffing if needed, weave in end while closing the hole at top of the head.

WINGS (Make 2)

With 5mm hook and the cream chunky yarn chain 6.

1st Row:- dc into 2nd chain from hook, half treble into next chain, treble into next chain, half treble into next chain and dc into last chain, DO NOT TURN YOUR WORK BUT WORK UP THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CHAIN,

TURN YOUR WORK NOW

2nd Row:- 1 chain, 1 dc in each stitch to end, (total 10 dc’s & 1 chain = 11).

3rd Row:- 1 chain, 1 dc in first stitch, 1 half treble in next stitch, 1 treble in next stitch, 2 treble’s in next stitch, 2 double treble’s in next 2 stitches, 2 treble’s in next stitch, 1 treble in next stitch, 1 half treble in next stitch, 1 dc in last stitch, (total 14 stitches & 1 chain = 15).

Finish of, weave in ends and attach to side of owl.

EARS (Make 2)

With 5mm hook and the cream chunky yarn chain 6.

1st Row:- dc into 2nd chain from hook, dc into each of the remaining chain, DO NOT TURN YOUR WORK BUT WORK UP THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CHAIN, dc into each chain, (total 10 dc’s and 1 chain = 11).

Finish of, weave in ends and attach to side of owl’s head.

GOWN 

With 3.5 mm hook and Graphite DK chain 73.

1st Row – Treble in 4th chain from hook, 1 treble into each chain (total 70 trebles & 3 chain).

2nd – 4th Row – 3 chain, 1 treble into each stitch (total 70 trebles & 3 chain).

5th Row – 3 chain, *dec 1, 1 treble in each of the next 3 stitches* repeat from *-* to end, (total 56 stitch & 3 chain).

6th Row – 3 chain, * 1 dec, 1 treble in next 2 stitches* repeat from *-* 2 times, slip stitch in next 12 stitches, repeat from *-* 4 times, slip stitch in next 12 stitches, repeat from *-* 2 times, (total 24 stitches, 24 slip stitches & 3 chain).

7th Row – 3 chain, *1 dec, 1 treble in next stitch* repeat from *-* 2 times, chain 8, miss the 12 slip stitches and  repeat from *-* 4 times, chain 8, miss the 12 slip stitches and repeat from *-* 2 times, (total 16 stitches, 2 x 8 chains, & 3 chains at beginning).

8th Row – 3 chain, 1 treble in next 4 stitches, 1 treble in each of the chain, 1 treble in next 8 stitches, 1 treble in each of the chain, 1 treble in next 4 stitches (total 32 treble & 3 chain).

Finish of.

Sleeves

*With right side of gown facing you join yarn on 7th slip stitch at bottom of armhole.

1st Row – 1 chain, 1 dc in each of the 6 slip stitches, 2 dc in each of the 2 posts up the side of the armhole, 1 dc in each of the chain along the top of the armhole, 2 dc in each of the posts down the side of the armhole, 1 dc in each of the 6 slip stitches along bottom of the armhole, slip stitch into 1st chain, (total 28 dc & 1 chain).

2nd – 3rd Rows – 3 chain, 1 treble in each stitch around armhole, slip stitch into 3rd chain at beginning, (total 28 trebles & 3 chain).

Finish of*

Repeat from *-* on the other armhole.

Weave in ends.

Border around Gown

With 3.5 mm hook and Silver DK and the gown right side facing you, join the yarn at the top left hand corner.

1st row – 1 chain, 2 dc in each post down the left hand side, 3 dc in corner, 1 dc in each of the starting chain along the bottom of the gown, 3 dc in corner, 2 dc in each post up the right hand side, 1 dc at top right hand corner to balance both sides, (total, 109 dc & 1 chain).

Finish of.

* Join the Silver DK at the bottom of the back of sleeve.

1st row – 1 chain, 1 dc in each stitch around the sleeve, slip stitch into chain, (total 28 dc’s & 1 chain).

Fasten of.*

Repeat from *-* around other sleeve.

MORTAR BOARD

With 3.5 mm hook and Graphite DK make 5 chain and slip stitch into first chain.

1st Round – 3 chain, 11 treble slip stitch into 3rd chain at beginning, (total 11 trebles & 3 chain).

2nd Round – 3 chain, 1 treble, 1 chain, 2 trebles in 1st stitch, *1 treble in next 2 stitches, 2 treble 1 chain 2 treble in next stitch,* repeat from *-* 3 times, 1 treble in next 2 stitches, slip stitch in 3rd chain from beginning, (total 4 corners (2 treble, 1 chain, 2 trebles (1st corner has the 3 chain counting as 1 treble) & 2 trebles along each side = 24 trebles & 4 chain).

3rd Round – Slip stitch into chain in corner, 3 chain, 1 treble, 1 chain, 2 trebles in corner chain, *1 treble in next 5 stitches, 2 treble, 1 chain, 2 trebles in corner chain, * repeat from *-* 3 times, 1 treble in next 5 stitches, slip stitch in 3rd chain at beginning, (total 4 corners (2 treble, 1 chain, 2 trebles (1st corner has the 3 chain counting as 1 treble) & 5 trebles along each side = 36 trebles & 4 chain).

Flip square over and slip stitch in back of stitches down to 2nd row.

Slip stitch in the back of each stitch in the 2nd row, slip stitch into the 1st slip stitch.

1st Round – 1 chain, 1 dc in each of the slip stitch, slip stitch into first chain (total 24 dc & 1 chain).

Finish of and weave in ends.

Tassel

Using the Silver DK cut 6 strands approx. 25 cm long. Bunch them together fold them over and tie knot at end, trim the fringe.

With another piece of silver yarn loop this through the 6 loops of the tassel and attach to the centre of the mortar board.

If required attach the mortar board to the head of the owl.

 

 

SCARF

With 3.5 mm hook and Aster DK chain 6.

1st row – 1 dc in 2nd chain from hook, 1 dc to end, (total 5 dc’s & 1 chain).

2nd row – 62nd row – 1 chain, 1 dc to end, (total 5 dc’s & 1 chain).

Finish of, weave in ends.

Fringe

Cut 10 pieces of Aster DK to approx. 8cm’s long.

Put the 3.5 mm hook in between the first and second stitch in first row. Double one of the piece of yarn over and place on hook and pull through the loop, with the 2 ends of the yarn make a knot through the loop.

Continue to do this in between each stitch on the bottom row and at the other end of your scarf.

Trim fringe if needed.

SCROLL

Cut a piece of white thick paper/thin card to 7 cms x 5 cms and roll into scroll.  Tie with a small piece of red yarn.  Place under one of the owls wings.

If required sew the ends of red yarn to the under sleeve of the gown to attach the scroll to the gown.
